    If you're using Photoshop, it's called Edit > "Stroke" and there are other ways of putting a border around things..

    First.
    Make a new layer.
    Goto that layer and go: Image>Apply Image
    Now Edit>Stroke i recommend 2px

    use a black border ALWAYS,

    try to add more depth and higher variety of colour,

    try playing with different effects,

    overall its looking good,

    keep it up ; )

    Yeah, try it with a BLACK Border.
    If the BG was black you would do white.
    i think borders should always be Black or White.

    Well you shouldn't ALWAYS use black/white borders.

    New Layer > Apply Image Use your Rectangular marquee Tool Select the Hole Layer. Click top left corner move to bottom right corner. Now go Edit > Stroke u can now choose your px size and color and placement.
    Try Center > 1px > Black ,should work out Smile
